Reddit Data Policy

Our Commitment to the Reddit Ecosystem

Makna is being built to help brands listen to and understand their communities on Reddit. We believe that authentic engagement starts with genuine understanding. Our platform is designed to help brands hear what people are really saying so they can participate meaningfully in community conversations — not manipulate them.

Makna is currently in pre-launch development. This policy describes how we handle Reddit data. We are committed to being a responsible partner within the Reddit ecosystem, respecting the community norms, user privacy, and platform policies that make Reddit valuable.

Governing Policies

Makna's access to and use of Reddit data is governed by Reddit's Developer Terms, Data API Terms, Responsible Builder Policy, Public Content Policy, and the Reddit User Agreement. In the event of any conflict between this policy and Reddit's terms, Reddit's terms prevail.

Data Access

Makna accesses Reddit data exclusively through Reddit's official Data API using properly registered OAuth credentials and a descriptive User-Agent string, in compliance with Reddit's Developer Documentation. We do not scrape Reddit. We do not purchase data from third-party data brokers. We do not use any methods to circumvent Reddit's API rate limits or access controls.

Data Retention & Lifecycle

Raw Reddit content (post titles, comment text, author information) is cached temporarily for a maximum of 48 hours while our natural language processing pipeline extracts derived analytics. After processing, all raw content is purged.

Only derived, aggregate analytics are retained after processing: sentiment scores, topic categorizations, mention counts, and aggregate statistics. These derived data points do not contain the original Reddit content and cannot be used to reconstruct it.

Makna displays brief metadata (e.g., post titles, subreddit names) with direct links back to the original content on Reddit, clearly attributed as content from Reddit in accordance with Reddit's Brand Guidelines. Users click through to Reddit to read full posts and comments. We do not reproduce full Reddit content within our product.

Content & Account Deletion Synchronization

Makna performs daily reconciliation against Reddit to detect deleted or removed content. When content is deleted or removed from Reddit:

  • All cached raw content related to the post or comment (including title, body, embedded URLs, and any other content) is purged within 24 hours.
  • All derived analytics referencing that specific content are also purged — even if they have been de-identified, disassociated, or anonymized. Retention of data derived from deleted content, in any form, is a violation of Reddit's policies.

When a Reddit user account is deleted:

  • All user ID information (e.g., t2_* identifiers) is deleted.
  • All references to author-identifying information — including author ID, username, profile URL, avatar image URL, and user flair — are removed from any cached or derived data associated with that account's posts and comments.

We respect the intent of content and account deletion by Reddit users and moderators. In compliance with Reddit's recommendation, we routinely purge stored user data and raw content within 48 hours of ingestion.

Content We Do Not Process

We explicitly filter and exclude the following at ingestion:

  • NSFW or adult-flagged content
  • Private messages or direct messages
  • Content from quarantined subreddits
  • Content from private or restricted subreddits

What We Do Not Do

Makna is a listening and analytics tool. We explicitly prohibit and do not provide functionality for:

  • Automated posting, commenting, or messaging on Reddit
  • Vote manipulation, karma manipulation, or brigading of any kind
  • Astroturfing or coordinated inauthentic behavior
  • Displaying advertisements alongside Reddit content
  • Selling, leasing, sublicensing, or redistributing Reddit data in any form
  • Training AI, machine learning, or algorithmic models on Reddit content
  • Building tools that enable inauthentic engagement
  • Deriving or inferring potentially sensitive characteristics about Reddit users (e.g., health conditions, political affiliation, sexual orientation)
  • Attempting to re-identify, de-anonymize, or reverse-engineer data about Reddit users, including matching Reddit data with off-platform identifiers
  • Building individual profiles of Reddit users or tracking users across subreddits
  • Sharing Reddit-sourced data with any third party

User Privacy

Reddit usernames are used transiently during content processing to attribute mentions and calculate aggregate statistics. We do not store individual user profiles. We do not track Reddit users across subreddits. We do not attempt to correlate Reddit accounts with real-world identities or match Reddit data with off-platform identifiers.

All analytics presented to Makna customers are aggregate in nature (e.g., mention volume by subreddit, overall sentiment trends, topic distributions). Where individual mentions are displayed, they link directly to the original Reddit content with proper attribution.

Attribution

In accordance with Reddit's Developer Terms and Brand Guidelines, Makna provides attribution for all Reddit-sourced content by:

  • Linking back to the original content on Reddit
  • Citing the applicable subreddit
  • Clearly indicating that the content originates from Reddit

Termination & Data Disposal

If Reddit revokes Makna's API access or terminates our authorization for any reason, we will immediately:

  • Stop all use of the Data APIs
  • Delete all cached and stored Reddit content
  • Delete all derived analytics and data that were derived from Reddit content accessed through the Data APIs or Reddit's other services

GDPR & Data Rights

Makna processes publicly available Reddit data under the legitimate interest legal basis (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). Our legitimate interest is providing brand monitoring analytics to our customers using publicly posted data.

Data subjects (Reddit users whose public content may be processed) have the right to:

  • Request access to any data we hold related to their Reddit username
  • Request erasure of any data associated with their Reddit username
  • Object to the processing of their publicly posted content

Right to Erasure for Reddit Users

If you are a Reddit user and would like any data associated with your username removed from Makna's systems, please contact us at privacy@makna.app with the subject line “Reddit Data Erasure Request” and include your Reddit username.

We will process your request within 30 days and confirm deletion of all associated data, including any derived analytics linked to your username.
